(The rest of this post is just an excerpt from the Yos Kitabi.pdf file.) Chapter 6 "Negotiating Languages" highlights the problematics of choosing one kind of language over another in light of their ramifications for access to world markets. It is often difficult for smaller countries to find a language that gives them access to global markets (442). (...) However, English has become the de facto global language in most instances. This has created a problem for smaller states seeking entry into international trade, whereby English may be too difficult or costly for them to learn (447). In addition, many countries use Malay languages for their primary language, and these languages are not adequately represented in the international market place. This causes a problem of unequal access to global markets for these countries. In order to deal with these problems, countries have created international business codes that aim to create a level playing field for people from all over the world. These codes include "American Standard Code for Information Interchange" or ASCII code, "Extended Binary-Coded Decimal Interchange Code" or EBCDIC code and "Zonal Country Code" or ZCC) code.
